As late as , most whites regarded the tropics as "the white man's grave," a realm of steamy fertility, moral dissolution, and disease. So how did the tropical beach resort—white sand, blue waters, and towering palms—become the iconic vacation landscape? Tropical Whites explores the dramatic shift in attitudes toward and popularization of the tropical tourist "Southland" in the Americas: Florida, Southern California, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Catherine Cocks examines the history and development of tropical tourism from the late nineteenth century through the early s, when the tropics constituted ideal winter resorts for vacationers from the temperate zones. Combining history, geography, and anthropology, this provocative book explains not only the transformation of widely held ideas about the relationship between the environment and human bodies but also how this shift in thinking underscored emerging concepts of modern identity and popular attitudes toward race, sexuality, nature, and their interconnections. Cocks argues that tourism, far from simply perverting pristine local cultures and selling superficial misunderstandings of them, served as one of the central means of popularizing the anthropological understanding of culture, new at the time.

I recently received the following letter from a single lady, 64, who enjoys cruising. I just read your cruise bargain article and I thought it was very enlightening. I have been on seven cruises, so I am not a veteran but certainly have experience. When are the cruise lines going to understand the "single person" dilemma?

I am a single lady who can travel at just about any time … but I am tired of the single supplement. Why in the world should a single person have to pay more for a cruise just because she has no one to travel with?

As you said, if the room sails empty the cruise line has lost money. Meanwhile, single ladies and men sit at home With very few exceptions, people who want to sail solo are charged the equivalent of two cruise fares if they want to sail in the average cruise ship stateroom alone, they must pay for the empty berth in the cabin. Why do the cruise lines charge this supplement? They would rather have a live person that will spend money on drinks, tours and spa treatments on the cruise than an empty bed.

This only underscores the plight of solo cruisers. Some solo cruisers are doing that, but many are only interested in a shared travel experience with like-minded people. Either way, what are the options for solo cruisers? The first option is to pay the singles supplement and sail alone. There are cruise lines that hold sales on singles supplement staterooms for as low as percent, percent or percent -- most often luxury cruise lines that appeal to elderly, widowed ladies.

The cruise lines that most commonly offer gentlemen hosts include Crystal Cruises, Cunard Line and even Holland America Line on certain sailings. These companies book group space on specific cruise ships and sail dates and then match same-sex solo cruisers as roommates.

Once onboard they hold activities for the people interested in matchmaking; speed dating and lunch dates, for example. The other people who are on these cruises to save money, rather than looking for love, can skip these optional activities. The third option, more commonly used by solo cruisers not looking for romance, is to seek out same-sex roommates who share their preferences in smoking and drinking.

The online cruise guide CruiseMates. The fourth option is cruise lines that offer specials for solo cruisers. Only one major cruise line, Holland America Line, has a policy that they will sell a cruise cabin to a solo cruiser and then match him or her with a roommate of the same gender and smoking preference. Those are the only qualifiers they use, however. If they cannot find a qualified at their discretion roommate they will give the cruiser an entire stateroom alone at no additional singles supplement cost.

The last option is to find the few cruise ships that have single cabins onboard. These cabins are small sq. The Living Room has a bar, free snacks, large screen televisions, and a regular host or hostess who organizes social activities for the solo cruisers onboard; special parties, group reservations in dining rooms and the special shows onboard this ship has exceptionally good entertainment such as Blue Man Group and The Second City comedy group from Chicago.

More good news is that the two new ships Norwegian is currently building, the first arriving in April , will also have studio staterooms, although not as many as Norwegian Epic contains. Halloween Cruises for Singles Get Creative. River Cruises.

5 Tips to Resolve the Solo Cruiser Dilemma

We'd like to understand how you use our websites in order to improve them. Register your interest. Data were combined from two studies—qualitative interviews with 19 female cruise-ship workers in a Florida port and quantitative interviews conducted with male and female cruise-ship workers in a European and a Florida port. Logistic regression analysis of 16 different variables showed that gender was the variable most strongly independently associated with a new sexual relationship: women were six times more likely than men to report a new private sexual relationship on their last contract OR 6. Qualitative data suggest some reasons for this gender imbalance: sexual harassment by male superordinates, the taking of a lover for protection from harassment and the liminal character of shipboard life.

Women are heading out on solo adventures more than ever before, and cruises for women traveling alone are as varied as the reasons that women take them. A cruise is a favorable vacation option for solo travelers because you have a built-in community with at least one shared interest: cruising.

Since we cannot post on here looking for someone to share a cabin, what are sites that are active where you could find someone? I've already tried Meetup groups. I posted an ad on Craigslist and had men or bicurious women contact me I shouldn't laugh lol. There's a cruise I want to go on, but really would only do it if I could find someone to split the room with. I'm not sure we can name any of the sites but if you Google "find a cruise companion" you will find a handful of sites.

Kate McCue was walking along a beach on the Caribbean island of St. Maarten last June when an attendant asked if she was heading back to one of the cruise ships docked there for the day. Wearing a pair of mirrored aviator sunglasses and a sundress over a swimsuit, McCue certainly looked the part of the relaxed vacationer. She replied, however, that she worked onboard, then asked the attendant to guess her role on the ship.

Looking for a cruise companion

Though we've been asked many times, we have always stayed away from helping people find travel partners. This has been an issue since I started Solo Traveler 10 years ago. I've had time to think about it — over and over again. And while I think that some services are fine, others make me anxious.
